Denmark has an extensive public healthcare system that offers free consultation and treatment with local doctors, and at emergency wards and public hospitals.
All residents who have a yellow health card, have access to the public healthcare system, and most services are provided free of charge.
This means you can consult a doctor, have treatment at an emergency room or public hospital and benefit from a number of other services such as home care, health visitor services and pediatric dental care.

Health insurance card
To be able to consult a doctor, you need to obtain the health insurance card, also known as the yellow health card (sundhedskort).
You must always bring your health insurance card (sundhedskort) when you visit your doctor, a hospital, the municipal office or other public service center. It is also this card that gives you access to public libraries after closing hours, just to give an example.
Children have their own health card, but go to the same main doktor as their mother/father.
If you are unsure how to optain a yellow card for your child, please inform you on this website
