Compulsory education

In Denmark, enrolment in school is not compulsory but it is compulsory for all children to receive education. All children at the compulsory education age are therefore entitled to education in primary and lower secondary school (folkeskole).

Normally, this also applies to foreign children who live in the country for 6 months or more.

Compulsory education means that the child shall participate in lessons that are set to a level corresponding to the level ordinarily required in a primary and lower secondary school (folkeskole). Alternatives to education in the primary and lower secondary schools can be for example home education or education at a free school or private basic school.

Compulsory education lasts for 10 years and comes into force in August of the year when the child reaches 6 years of age. However, the commencement of this education can be postponed in consideration of the child’s development.

Preschool class

Preschool class is compulsory and your child can be enrolled in a preschool class in the calendar year when the child turns 6 years old. Children turning 5 years old before October 1 in the same year can be enrolled in a preschool class, if they can follow the lessons in the first class in the following year. The school evaluates and determines, if the child can be enrolled.

Children who already attend a preschool class are regarded as registered for the first class in the following year.

Enrolment in primary and lower secondary school (folkeskole)

The division of the municipality into school districts is purely geographical.  There is open enrolment in Lolland Municipality. This means that parents are free to choose which primary and lower secondary school their children attend.  If you choose a primary and lower secondary school in a school district outside the area where you reside, special rules for enrolment apply, which the School Sector can provide further information about. You can contact them at skoler@lolland.dk.

When a district school is selected, all parents have an unconditional right to have their children enrolled at that school, regardless of the number of pupils and classes.  The district school sends an enrolment form to all the homes that have children who should be attending school. The enrolment form should be filled out and returned in the enclosed stamp addressed envelope within the date stated on the form with the enrolment information or a request for another form of school. If you have not received a school enrolment letter before 1st December at the latest, we request that you contact the School Sector via skoler@lolland.dk.

By the latest 1st March, each home receives a letter confirming the school and class your child will be attending.

Information about the school districts can be obtained on the municipality’s website or from a primary and lower secondary school (folkeskole) or the Citizen Services Centre.

SFO is an after-school care offer for children attending school. The care takes place at the school after the last hour of teaching; at many of the locations there is also morning care before school starts for children in classes up to and including third class.   SFO schemes are available at all schools.

Contact your child’s school for more information about the after-school care scheme.

School buses

Lolland Municipality issue bus cards to schoolchildren based on the class they are in and the distance from home to the school.

The school bus card can be obtained upon application at the individual school.

Education in native languages

Lolland Municipality as a rule does not provide education in the native languages. Executive order 618 of 22nd July 2002 provides for the continued possibility of education in the native language of children from EU countries, the Faroe Islands and Greenland.

In the explanatory memorandum to the executive order, you can read that municipalities are freely disposed to include education in native language.   The current executive order presupposes that an offer shall only apply, if a class of at least 12 pupils can be established.

Currently, Lolland Municipality does not have any such class.
